Designing with light is central to James Turrrell's art. In his light spaces, visitors are immersed in an interplay of artificial and natural light that makes space, color, material and surfaces a sensual and mental experience and triggers a wide variety of thoughts and feelings.
Lighting design also plays a fundamental role in photography and film. It shapes moods, emotions and stories and is the basis of aesthetic staging.
In the workshop, apprentices from Zumtobel and Liebherr, together with filmmaker Christoph Skofic and cultural mediator Renée Jud, explored how light creates atmosphere, how objects are visually modeled and how light colors shape our perception of our surroundings.
The project started in Skyspace-Lech. Here, aesthetic aspects and psychological effects of perception can be experienced directly on site. The subsequent exploration of optical illusions was the first step towards raising awareness of one's own perception.
The second part of the project took place in the Liebherr studio in Nenzing, where light became the subject of photographic and film experiments. The apprentices used professional camera and lighting equipment and the cameras on their own smartphones to create photographs, or rather light art.
The apprentices used professional camera and lighting equipment and the cameras on their own smartphones to create photographs, or rather light art. The aim was to give the apprentices a feel for the management and properties of light and to develop a sensitivity for lighting situations in everyday life.
The project was supported by Double Check. Network for Culture and Education in Vorarlberg.
